Bloomfield

Bloomfield is located about three miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh in the East End. An urban middle class city neighborhood of rowhouses bisected by a business district around Liberty Avenue, residents benefit from easy access to Bloomfield’s bars, restaurants, and markets on Liberty Ave.

HISTORY

George Washington originally took note of the area for its fields of wildflowers. After Bloomfield’s annexation into the City of Pittsburgh in 1868, German Catholic immigrants settled in the late 1800s. However, at the turn of the century, Italian immigrants came to the area now known as Pittsburgh’s Little Italy. If you are interested in learning more about the history of the neighborhood, stop by the Bloomfield Preservation & Heritage Society Museum and Gallery.

LOCATION

Bordered by Lawrenceville, Friendship, and Shadyside, Bloomfield is conveniently located near the universities in Oakland, the strip district, and the Golden Triangle of downtown Pittsburgh.

Every year in September, Bloomfield plays host to the Little Italy Days Festival. Bloomfield’s Halloween parade is also the largest nighttime parade in Pittsburgh.
