South Side

The South Side consists of two communities: the South Side Flats and the South Side Slopes.

History

The South Side was part of a land grant from the King of England to John Ormsby in 1763 for his service in the French and Indian War. When his son in law, Dr. Nathaniel Bedford, mapped out the area for development in the 1800s, the street names were named after his friends and family. Looking back on the history of the South Side, it’s legacy is one of industrialization. Starting with glass works in the early 1800s, the South Side later transitioned to iron and steel. Now, the South Side has shed much of its industrial image and is known for its shopping, restaurants, bars, and nightlife.
